In-Between Matter
Experiencing What Lies In-Between
This installation explores In-Between Matter—the subtle states that Shimadzu Corporation has long sought to reveal through its analytical technologies. Inspired by Shimadzu’s instruments, the work shifts the focus from explanation to experience, inviting visitors to encounter the fascination of science through their senses rather than through logic alone. Behind measurement and data lies something more fundamental: curiosity, and the quiet moments when perception begins to shift. The installation gives form to these moments, creating a space where the phenomena emerging between materials can be directly felt.

Installation
Drift between logic and sensibility
Following the previous exhibition WONDER POWDER, which explored the fascination of science through the specific material and phenomena of powder, In-Between Matter expands its scope toward more abstract scientific concepts such as separation and boundaries. It gives form to Shimadzu’s enduring pursuit of visualization through analytical instruments, translating it into an immersive installation. Across fields including pharmaceuticals, food, chemistry, semiconductors, transportation, and the environment, analytical technologies play a vital role in separating substances. Here, that process is reinterpreted as a sensory experience through four installations: Liquid Interface, Optical Rotation, Particle Settling, and Chromatography. Visitors are invited to situate themselves within the space between materials— to move fluidly across the threshold between logic and sensibility.
