VEILANCE
Returning Discarded Concrete Waste to the Urban Landscape
This project centers on the interior design of the first standalone store in Japan for VEILANCE, the urban wear line by Canadian outdoor brand ARC’TERYX. Concrete waste sourced from Tokyo has been reimagined as a vernacular material, repurposed for the store’s interior design. In Japan, industrial concrete waste amounts to approximately 61.68 million tons annually, with around 96% being crushed and recycled. However, the remaining 4% is sent directly to landfills, primarily for efficiency reasons. For this project, we selected concrete pieces typically destined for disposal, blended them with natural ingredients, and transformed them into a plaster material used in the space’s finishes. VEILANCE advocates design works for urban dwellers corresponding to their urban surroundings. While its plaster-finish interior employing an urban vernacular material that resonates with its design philosophy, this minimally constructed space also embodies VEILANCE’s world view.
