More than Materials

Collecting and exhibiting 'More than Materials' from small factories
Ota Ward, Tokyo, known as a “town of manufacturing,” is home to approximately 3,500 factories. Many of these small-scale factories produce prototypes and machine parts before they are released to the market. Some possess unique technologies and products that can only be created there. Conducting fieldwork in these factories, where the essence of craftsmanship thrives, we+ collected and reinterpreted the distinct “objects” born from their operations, naming them “More than Materials.”
we+ presented the first exhibition of “OTA CURIO-CITY,” a project that reinterprets the industries and culture cultivated in Ota Ward through their unique perspective. Drawing inspiration from this reinterpretation, the project explores new forms of craftsmanship and creative expression.

Displaying keywords and background stories in card format
From materials in processing to well-worn jigs and prototypes filled with advanced technology, even to discarded materials – what may seem ordinary to a factory takes on an entirely different charm and meaning when observed from a different perspective or detached from its context and physically examined. In the ‘More than Materials’ exhibition, we intentionally refrained from categorizing the collected ‘objects’ and displayed them together. Each ‘object’ was presented with a card featuring keywords and the background story, encouraging viewers to actively explore and circulate through the exhibition.
