Our fifth guest is Rossana Orlandi, a gallerist and curator who runs an art and design gallery in Milan. She left the fashion industry to become a gallerist in 2002, and is now one of the most important figures in the design world today. Many top designers have gone international after showing at Rossana Orlandi Gallery. We+ has also been showing their works there since 2017. (Interview in August 2021)

ロッサーナこんにちは。お元気ですか？

HokutoYes, we are fine, we won't be able to join the next Milan Design Week due to Covid-19, but we hope to present our new works in Milan next year.

安藤はい元気です。次のミラノデザインウィークはコロナもあって参加できませんが、来年のミラノでは新作をお披露目したいです。

RossanaYes, we are looking forward to it. We are now planning to use digital solutions to allow designers to participate in projects without having to be in Milan.

ロッサーナはい、楽しみにしています。私たちはいま、デジタルソリューションを使って、デザイナーがミラノにいなくてもプロジェクトに参加できるように計画をしているところです。

ToshiyaGreat! Now let’s start the interview. You used to work in the fashion industry, but about 20 years ago you made a big career change and started Rossana Orlandi Gallery. How did you start the gallery and what is the concept behind it?

林それはすばらしい動きですね。では早速インタビューをはじめましょう。あなたは以前、ファッション業界で働かれていたそうですが、約20年前に大きなキャリアチェンジをし、ロッサーナ・オルランディ・ギャラリーを立ち上げられました。ギャラリーをスタートした経緯やそのコンセプトを教えてください。

RossanaI have been working in fashion for many years. It was a very passionate and exciting thing, and I also worked with Japanese company for eight years. That was a wonderful experience. So I love Japan. However, I was tired of the rapidly changing trends in the fashion industry and I didn't find it interesting anymore. That's when I happened to come across this very wonderful place and decided to start a gallery.  I have always been fascinated by design and was a design collector. Selecting pieces to show in the gallery is always an emotional experience, and I try to create a dialogue between the pieces. That is my style.

ロッサーナ私は長年ファッションの仕事をしてきました。とても情熱的でわくわくするものでしたし、日本とも8年間仕事をしたんですよ。あれは素敵な仕事で、日本が大好きです。ただ、急速にトレンドが移り変わるファッション業界に疲れてしまい、面白みを感じなくなってしまったんです。そんな時、たまたまとてもすばらしい場所に出会うきっかけがあって、ギャラリーを始めることにしたんです。もともとデザインに魅了され、デザインコレクターだったという背景もあります。ギャラリーで展示する作品を選ぶことはいつもエモーショナルな体験で、作品同士の対話が生まれることを大切にしています。それが私のスタイルです。

HokutoRossana Orlandi Gallery is famous in Japan as a gallery that deals with what is called "collectible design" and "contemporary design". What does design mean to you?

安藤ロッサーナ・オルランディ・ギャラリーは、いわゆるコレクティブルデザイン、コンテンポラリーデザインを扱うギャラリーとして日本でも有名ですが、あなたにとってデザインとは何ですか？

RossanaI think that design is very open and creates positive emotions. It is simple, but what I value is that it is based on emotions and inspiration.

ロッサーナデザインはとても開かれていて、ポジティブな感情を生み出すものだと思います。私が大切にしていることは、シンプルですが感情や感動がベースにあることです。

HokutoWhen you think about it, you could say that the gallery is "you".

安藤だとすれば、ギャラリーはあなたそのものと言えるかもしれませんね。

RossanaYes, the gallery is my pleasure. Being with my work all the time is the most important thing for me.

ロッサーナそうですね、ギャラリーは私の楽しみそのものです。いつも作品と一緒にいることが何よりも大切なことなのです。

ToshiyaIn Japan, the collectible design scene is not that active, and places like your gallery are hard to find. How do you feel about Japanese design?

林日本ではコレクティブルデザインのシーンがそこまで活発ではなく、あなたのギャラリーのような場所はなかなかありませんが、日本のデザインについてどう感じていますか？

RossanaI like Japanese design, including your work. I think it is very sophisticated and culturally mature. Unfortunately, I have not worked with many Japanese designers.

ロッサーナ日本のデザインは好きですよ。もちろんあなた方の作品も含めて。とても洗練されていますし、文化的にも成熟していると思います。残念ながら日本のデザイナーとそこまで多く仕事をしたことはないのですが。

HokutoWhat is the role of design in society?

安藤これからのデザインが社会に果たす役割とは何でしょうか？

RossanaIn this day and age, designers have to think about how to use materials in a sustainable way, and I think they have a responsibility to confront many social issues. It's not enough to just make beautiful things, I feel that the necessity and validity of making things is becoming more important. I think It is a very positive trend that there is a demand for designs that are beautiful, entertaining, and full of future possibilities. With this in mind, the gallery will make two presentations at this year's Milan Design Week. One is Collectible Design, which showcases the best of the best, and the other is the Guiltlessplastic®︎ project that I started with my daughter, which aims to solve the plastic problem. It will be a very large presentation on the importance and value of used plastic and waste, and many people will enjoy the adventure of used plastic made possible by technology and innovation.

ロッサーナ今の時代、デザイナーは持続可能な素材のあり方を考えなければいけませんし、多くの社会問題に立ち向かう責任があると思います。ただ美しいものをつくるだけでは駄目で、ものづくりの必然性や正当性がより大切になってきていると感じます。美しくて、人を楽しませることができ、未来の可能性にも溢れている、そんなデザインが求められていることは非常に好ましい傾向だと思っています。そんな背景もあり、次のミラノデザインウィークでは2つのプレゼンテーションを行います。一つは特にすぐれた作品を紹介するコレクティブルデザイン、もう一つは、娘とともに立ち上げたプラスチック問題の解決を目指すGuiltlessplastic®︎(罪のないプラスチック）プロジェクトです。使用済みプラスチックや廃棄物の重要性と価値を伝える非常に大きなプレゼンテーションで、テクノロジーやイノベーションによって叶えられる使用済みプラスチックの冒険を、多くの方に楽しんでいただけると思います。

ToshiyaIn your introduction to the Guiltlessplastic®︎ project, you say that plastic itself is not guilty, but the problem is misuse and abuse of it. Can you tell us the details of the project?

林あなたはGuiltlessplastic®︎プロジェクトの紹介文のなかで、プラスチックそのものが悪者なのではなく、誤った使い方や乱用が問題なのだと言われていますね。プロジェクトのことをもう少し詳しく教えていただけますか？

RossanaPlastic itself is not guilty. Plastic is a fabulous material and we cannot live without it. So a few years ago, I started the Ro Plastic Prize to show the value, beauty, and reusability of recycled plastic. I wanted to engage people who cannot change their mentality and encourage them to take action. In the early days of the prize, there were only a few designers who used recycled materials, but now there are many wonderful and valuable creations that can help solve problems. People should be more aware of the importance and value of works made from recycled plastics. But the most important thing is to protect the environment by encouraging people not to throw away any more plastic.

ロッサーナプラスチックそのものは悪者ではありません。プラスチックは非常に優れた素材で、私たちはプラスチックなしには生きていけません。そこで私は数年前、リサイクルプラスチックの価値と、美しさ、再利用の可能性を示すために、Ro Plastic Prize(ロープラスチック賞）を立ち上げました。考えをなかなか変えられない人々を巻き込み、行動を促したいと思ったのです。賞を立ち上げたばかりの頃は、リサイクル素材を使うデザイナーは少数でしたが、今では多くのすばらしい作品が生まれています。それらは課題解決につながる非常に価値のある作品たちです。人々はもっと、リサイクルプラスチックから生まれる作品の重要性と価値を知るべきです。でも最も大切なことは、これ以上プラスチックを捨てないように人々を促し、環境を守ることなのです。

HokutoThe launch of the prize has changed the way people think, hasn't it?

安藤賞を立ち上げたことで、人々の考えが変わってきたのですね。

RossanaAbsolutely yes. I think the situation has changed a lot, because more and more people understand the problem, and there are wonderful works of art made from recycled plastic. When I started this project four years ago, some people said, "Her theory is wrong!” But now, what was not possible then is technically possible.

ロッサーナその通りです。問題を理解する人が増えて、リサイクルプラスチックを使ったすばらしい作品が生み出されるようになり、状況は大きく変わったと思います。また、新しいテクノロジーが新たな素材を生み出してもいます。4年前にプロジェクトを始めた頃は「彼女の理論は間違っている！」とも言われましたが、当時はできなかったことが今では技術的にできるようになっています。

HokutoI always feel the power of design and art through your projects, and it is really wonderful that people are being changed through the Ro Plastic Prize. By the way, environmental issues are a big theme that people all over the world are facing, but the pandemic of the Covid-19 is also a big problem. In a previous interview, you said that your gallery is a meeting place for all kinds of people, and that you welcome talented people to join you. Is the role of the gallery changing now because of the difficulty of meeting?

安藤いつもあなたのプロジェクトには、デザインやアートのパワーを感じます。Ro Plastic Prizeを通して人々に変化が起きていることは、本当にすばらしいことです。環境問題は世界中の人々が直面する大きなテーマですが、新型コロナウイルスによるパンデミックもまた大きな問題です。以前のインタビューの中で、あなたのギャラリーはあらゆる人々の出会いの場であり、才能ある人々が私たちの仲間になることを歓迎しているとおっしゃっていましたが、集うことが難しい今、ギャラリーの役割に変化はありますか？

RossanaThe pandemic has changed everything dramatically, but this is the dawn of a new era. Everyone is trying to find a different way than we used to before, but the new way of communicating with technology tends to leave out the emotions, so we are trying to find a better way of it. It is always exciting to work on something new. It is true that we don't get to travel as much, and there are fewer opportunities to get emotional but it also means that we are given precious time to consider and think deeply. Milan never stops!

ロッサーナパンデミックによってすべてが大きく変わってしまいましたが、これは新しい時代の幕開けとも言えます。皆、以前とは違ったやり方を模索していますが、テクノロジーを使った新たなコミュニケーションは感情が抜け落ちがちなので、より良いコミュニケーションのあり方を見つけようとしています。新しいことに取り組むことはいつもわくわくするものです。確かに旅行にはあまり行けず、感情を揺さぶられる機会も減ってはいますが、思考を深める貴重な時間が与えられているとも言えるわけですから。ミラノは止まりませんよ！
